A sprawling line of wood and steel track lies behind you, reaching all the way back to Newgate and the Sea of Rust. You have come, like all the rest, workers, beggars and whores to "Iron Town" the name given the mass of tents and lean-tos that surround the stopped engine of the great Iron Serpent* "The Naga's Heart". You signed on with the expeditionary company "The Silver Coin" to explore ahead of the train, scout and map the terrain, contact the indigines, if any, and in general make it safe for the Naga to continue its winding path westward. In return for your risk, you are paid a simple stipend by the company, given shelter and equipment as necessary - but most importantly, a share of any riches you may find along the way.
*An Iron Serpent (serpentline) is a connected series of vehicles for rail transport that move along a track (permanent way) to transport cargo or passengers from one place to another place. The track consists of two rails and the "engine" that pulls the entire conveyance. The engine is powered by a summoned spirit controlled by a summoner-a specialist wizard or priest, without whom the spirit would run amok.
