Along with your favorite copy of Savage Worlds you'll find everything you need to get started under the Wikis tab in the Source Materials Wiki. You'll especially want to read the one page article, 'Making a Crew' and discuss it with your fellow players so that you know what your role is and you are ready to start play when we meet at the table for the first session.

Your character starts at 20 XP and has $500 to spend on gear. Assume you have several changes of cloths and a place to stay (Your ship!, The Blazing Star - on permanent "loan" from a galaxy-wide crime syndicate, the Shandama Brotherhood).

Futuristic Weapons: the lasers and laser swords as listed in SWEX are not available. If you want a hand weapon that stuns add +%50 of the cost to the weapon and you're done. Example: Take the baton, add +50% to the cost, you now have a Stun Baton.

So for ranged weapons we simply choose from the modern weapons available in SWEX? Are they simply slug throwers at this point, or are they cooler and more sci-fi without being lasers?

I see all of the pre-gens have "blaster pistols" that are kind of like standard pistols, except they hold more rounds.

From page 6 of the DTSL guide: Just use the regular Savage Worlds weapons (and prices) and tweak the names accordingly. For instance, the default blaster pistol is just a Glock with no AP rating. A Desert Eagle might be called a heavy blaster pistol, an Uzi an auto-blaster, and an M16 a blaster rifle.

Between a pistol and a wrist computer you'll probably use up most of your money.

Yep. Used up 400 credits on my tools and a "peacemaker" blaster. That's okay though. I don't have to buy any armor or a spaceship. :)

Tools - you must have got some help from a fellow Savage. Thanks to whoever that was. Many players forget those. Yes they cost a lot but they help alot too!

Peacemaker - just remember that this is a single shot weapon, no double taps and it takes a while to reload. Still, it has a bigger punch than the standard blaster.
