A Siege on the Temple of Bane & Working with Torm
Marpenoth 11
A single building off the wharf is smoldering. The three ships all bear the symbol of Torm as do the sailors. After a half hour or so a woman wearing plate armor rides onto the wharf. The crew jumps to her order, “pick the up the pace, we're spreading out too much”.
The crew unloads barrels and crates.
Having heard enough, I head back to tell the guys what's going on. As I head back, I notice a large number of troops marching along the road toward the town. They are led by a woman in plate male who addresses the woman from the docks as Ubsandra. There are three “companies” of approximately 100 soldiers each led by a “commander” in plate – two women and a man.
As the carts move past, there are “engineers” assembling five ballistas in five separate carts.
Brand identifies the symbol on the soldiers as Torm – the arch enemy of Bane. After some deliberation, we decide to head to the road with the slaves and meet up with the army. Best to let the army know that the slaves are safe and we are not their enemy. (At least we hope not. Although we did discuss taking the three remaining ships and heading back to Sambar and giving the ships to the Krom family.)
We meet up with the army as Captain Brash rides forth and verifies that we pose not threat. General Gorgo (female commander) comes out to talk to us.
Ralira is the priestess of Bane. We discuss with Gorgo what we know of the temple as well as the back door and secret entrance into the keep itself. After describing who we are and why we are there, we agree to go and guard the back entrance while Gorgo lays siege to the temple.
A couple of hours after setting up watch at the backdoor, we hear voices. A man emerges leading a number of slaves roped together. Donegal let's the man emerge from the cave a ways and then runs him through with his lucky spear. Brand fires an arrow into a robed figure still in the cave. A third slaver steps out from the cave, grabbing a slave, and putting a knife to his throat.
I fly into the cave but don't see the robed figure. I case color fan in hopes of catching him. Donegal grabs his forehead and grunts, as the slaver eye's roll back in his head as he falls over.
I move forward into the cave and hit something – that damn robed guy is a mage and had turned invisible. But I managed to stun him. What the hell, I can't cast a spell on him if I can't see him. So doing the next best thing, I strike him with my trusty dagger, plunging deep into his side [for one point of damage]. Not sure what the others are doing, but I am in a life and death battle with this fierce mage. He casts a lightning bolt at Brand doing little. I retaliate with a blistering magic missile. Brand lashes out with a
grey burn. This mage is quick, he dives past me as he's reaching into his bag. Growing tired of the mage, I unleash a mighty ice bolt and dispatch the mage.
We search the slavers and find a wand of lightning bolt, a potion of healing, an indeterminate potion, and a smooth stone that radiates magic. Can you find Waldo?
We question the “businessman” and he claims to have purchased the slaves from Pantar. He doesn't want to talk – even when we help him by breaking both of his legs. He's not very bright!
As it's getting late we decide to camp a short distance from the cave opening. During the night one of the slavers walks over to the “businessman” slaver and strangles him. Brand had a chance to stop him but choice not to. I would have done the same thing. During the evening Donegal has a conversation with one of the slaves and realizes that we are not much different from slaves ourselves!!
Athena is a slaver!!!
The next morning we take the slaves over to Torm army. General Gorga mentions that the assault was successful but that Ralira had escaped again. We escort 20 soldiers back to the cave entrance to search from that direction.
We meet with Priestess Padma to speak with the dead “businessman” slaver. In discussion we learn that Blackheart is quite the entrepreneur owning over 15 ships. Padma casts speak with dead and learns that he goes to an old lost fort in the Drachensgrab Hills in Chult. The second question regarding the location of Rilira was not as successful.
After our partial success with Padma, we discuss next steps with Gorga. She indicates that they plan to take the slaves to Lantan, dock for a couple of days and then head to the Drachesgrab Hills, and is willing and glad to have us along.
It looks like we have a next step.
