Organized Thoughts on Our Major Battles
Desnus 10:

We returned to Harrowstone today. I had just finished researching a new spell that would help us by enchanting our weapons with the power to strike incorporeal enemies. Father Renn asked Irori for a similar spell, as well.

As we expected, the poltergeist threw all manner of medical supplies at us. Syringes, scalpels, broken vials and other pieces of glass flew around the room in a whirlwind of dangerous shrapnel. Its aim was terrible, or maybe we were just very well-prepared. Either way, the new spell did exactly what we were hoping for, and the poltergeist was defeated at swordpoint. It is a temporary defeat, and we may have to deal with it again later, if we have any reason to return to this room.

We found plenty of healing supplies in the infirmary. Fascinating that after all this time, they're still fine; antitoxins and antiplagues seem especially useful, but we'll see.

At this point, Ezra said something that forced us all to make a very tough decision. "You know, if I'm right about this, based on the layout of the ground floor...the furnace room is on the other side of that door." The furnace. Dorian was killed there, and Father Renn almost fell victim to it, as well. We didn't have to fight it again. We could have completely avoided it. In the end, we decided to take it on. This time, we were going to win. We would avenge Dorian and ensure that the spooky thing could never claim another victim ever again!

Since I obviously survived to write this, the reader can rest assured knowing that we were successful. It took a few vials of holy water from our new paladin friend to destroy the evil spirit, and now it is gone! Maybe my nightmares will go away now? I can still here the rhyme in my head: "One, two, Freddy's coming for you..." But even now, I can't for the life of me figure out who "Freddy" is.

It's strange; as terrified as I am of this place, I feel a lot better with these people with me. Father Renn is always so calm and insightful, and yet, when he needs to be, he can call forth tremendous strength. Ezra looks scary, and he comes across as strange, but now that I know more about him, I understand how he thinks, and I know I can trust him. Both of them can keep me calm when things turn scary; I hope I'm being useful to them. I'm not used to this rough-and-tough stuff.

Adrian, the new guy. He's reckless. He calls it bravery, but I call it recklessness. I don't know what to think of him yet, but I'm sure he'll be just like Ezra and Father Renn--not scared of anything, never worried about being an unneeded extra...

Anyway, we decided to go upstairs, where we found a series of barred prison cells inhabited by skeletons. A trapdoor in the ceiling seemed to lead outside to the roof. Ezra opened it up, but then the music started...

The music. The horrifying, sorrowful tune that seemed to try to grip at my mind. the skeletons in the prisons stirred and stood up, ready to exit their cages and descend upon us like a swarm of undeath. Fear grabbed my heart with its icy hands, and I was visibly shaking almost the whole time we were up there. We had to escape. We had to run.

My summoned riding dog bit at a bony leg and threw its undead owner to the ground. I prepared to leap over it to escape, but more skeletons began to surround us. I wasn't going to make a break for it without the others, so I steeled myself and tried to help in any way I could. Immediately after making this decision, I was badly wounded by skeletal claws...

I had a wand. A wand that could heal my wounds. I just needed to escape down the hall and use it, and then I'd turn around and come back. But where to escape? There were skeletons everywhere! At this point, I began to give in to despair. We were going to die here, weren't we? With this horrifying tune playing in the background, and these rotted corpses attacking us...

There was a flash of light, and a wave of energy. I looked up to see Father Renn, holy symbol in hand, standing in the midst of it all. He must have called upon Irori, his patron god, to help us out! Time seemed to stand still as I looked around the room. As each skeleton was hit with the divine energy wave, they all dropped, one by one. A few of them crumbled to dust; some of them simply collapsed. A few survived, but were definitely damaged.

That was the rally I needed. I'm out of spells, and useless in hand-to-hand (staff-to-claw?) combat, so I did the next best thing I could think of: I brandished the healing wand and made sure that nobody got killed! Despite Father Renn's best efforts, we were still dealing with the enchanting music, so the need to escape was still pressing. Wounded, terrified, and spent of all of our magical energy, we helped each other to the stairwell and dashed down the stairs (and out the door) as fast as we could.

This is the poltergeist all over again. We will come back to defeat this. We will find out what Professor Lorrimor was investigating and who his killers were. We will cleanse Harrowstone of all of its evil before it grows too powerful. We just need a plan...

I split this into two parts, since it was such an eventful session.
