Race: Half-giant
Gender: Female
Role: Defender
Class/Level: Battlemind/1
Background:
The circumstances of Bera Greyskin’s birth are unknown. She was found as an infant on the barren plains of Athas by a band of Halfling raiders. The leader of the group realized the potential benefits of having a large warrior around, and raised the half-giant to be a fierce fighter, giving her the name Greyskin. Though she lived with the group from infancy to adolescence theirs was a relationship of necessity rather than the bond of a family. She grew, heartless and wild, defending the pack from adversaries and feasting off their flesh. One day while separated from her pack, a Templar and his guards, thinking her a deserter of the Sorcerer Kings army, captured Greyskin. Upon realizing his mistake, seeing she was far to uncouth and untamed to be useful to him or the army, she was sold into slavery.
Greyskin’s new master, Melina, was an ageing noble woman in need of a guard. She was kind, and gave Greyskin her first lessons in compassion, and also the name Bera. A master of psionic powers, yet growing weak in body, Bera’s master believed her greedy nephews were plotting her death. Growing tired of the corruption and deceit of the city, she urged Bera to accompany her to a small oasis she had visited as a child so that she may live the rest of her life in peace. They lived in the oasis for three years, Melina taught her to read and write, and to control her anger and temper. As Melina died she granted Bera freedom, but warned that her nephews would not honor her wishes, and urged Bera to not be discovered by them. The anguish of her master’s death (whom she had come to love as a mother) sent a psionic surge bursting forth from Bera’s hands. Thinking this a sign that her master was living on through her, Bera felt her anguish subside into serenity.
Homeless and friendless Bera left the oasis to spread her master’s sense of compassion. Always struggling to keep her wild fierceness under control, Bera is seeking work as a bodyguard until she can best discover how to spread the message of her master’s kindness through the world. Although she is cunning in battle Bera is still young and naive especially in the ways of urban life. She struggles to be kind, but is quick to anger, and because of her Halfling upbringing socially awkward. This awkwardness is enhanced by the fact that Bera believes that her master literally lives inside her and thinks of herself as two people in one body, and often appears to be debating with herself. (she is low in intelligence and charisma) Whether Melina actually did find a way to live on in Bera's body or if her manifestation is Bera's own psychosis is undeterminable.
Bera has a naïve view of slavery since her master was so kind and saved her from a life of murdering and cannibalism. She is distrustful of magic, and thinks that rulers are wrongfully greedy. However, because of her unusual upbringing she realizes people are not always as they seem.
