So I met some interesting people on my journey. They're both heading to Nashtar as well, so we've decided to travel together. We are all heading that way for different reasons, but traveling as a group is safer, and we might be able to help each other out once we get there.
One is a paladin from the Order of Liege, Kain. He seems very young, this is his first mission out of the monastery on his own. He's a little zealous, but it's to be expected from his order I guess. Kain seems a little naive, he keeps talking about making a difference in the world and reforming his order. But I'm glad enough to have a companion who's good at using a sword and shield to keep the goblins and orcs out of my face. But more on that in a bit.
The other member of our little group is Katniss. Another half-elf like me, she's just a little bit crazy. She dresses in all greens and browns, and worships nature. She even travels with a wolf! I will admit that she's an interesting girl, having run away from her family at a young age, and now just wandering the land. She seems nice enough, even traveling here to help a family of gnomes that needs help with a family artifact or something. They're helpful in a fight, but I'm not sure I trust that wolf of hers. She seems a little headstrong, charging down orcs without proper armor.
Once we decided to travel together, we talked about why we were all heading to Nashtar. Turns out you can learn a lot about somebody when you're walking together for a couple weeks. Kain is investigating rumors of some kind of cult, or so he says. It seems kind of weird that his superiors would send him out on his first mission with so little information, I thought they would assign somebody more experienced to find and root out a true threat, even if it is just a rumor. But it's not my place to judge.
Katniss is apparently on her way to help some gnome family find a family artifact they lost, or was stolen. Even she doesn't have a real reason to do this, other than she wants to. We haven't really looked into it yet, but I'm sure it won't be too hard to find.
I'm traveling to Nashtar because my mother asked me to. A friend of hers, Harold, suddenly stopped talking with her a couple months ago. At first she thought he was just off on some kind of excursion, but it's been too long. So she asked me to go look into it, and here I am. She'd do it herself, but it's already apparent that my abilities are stronger than hers. I just hope I can control it; even with all the exercises she taught me, it's hard to control this kind of power. I'm worried about what will happen to me, I've heard of dragonborn that have their bloodline show, but mine just manifests in moments of major stress. I'm learning to control it, but I still have a long ways to go.
When we got to Nashtar, we decided the local inn would be the best place to find some information, and a nice bed to sleep in. A local guard posted a wanted flyer, apparently they're having some trouble with brigands here. While it's not part of our missions, we can use the coin. So we talked to the local marshal the next day and he said the reward was five hundred gold pieces for the band leader's head. We decided that we'd do something about it if we can.
After that we asked around about Kain's cult, and while the local priestess didn't know anything about that, she definitely was good looking. If we come through Nashtar again, I plan to look her up, see if she'd like a night out on the town. Then we talked to some local "sage." I still think he was just a crazy old hermit, but Kain seemed to pay attention as he was babbling on about some tower and the crazy lights and music he heard coming from it. Bah! Old loony was trying to brew a potion to "protect" us from it, but it wasn't any kind of concoction I'd ever drink.
We decided next to head out to Harold's, since it sounded like he hadn't been around much since the band of thieves showed up, and he might know more about what's going on. But when we got to his house, it was trashed! The place was a mess, doors ripped off and all kinds of stuff thrown all over the place.
As we started to go through the house, we were ambushed. A human was leading the group, which also consisted of three orcs and a goblin with some magical abilities. Katniss took on the orcs before Kain even had a chance to get to her, and it turns out that she doesn't know a lot about defensive fighting. She did manage to kill one, but almost died herself. I killed the goblin, and proceeded to light the orcs on fire. Kain charged in and was tearing them up with his sword, while Katniss' wolf, Cina, kept trying to herd them or something. He was snapping at them, and then dancing away from their weapons. Oh well, hopefully he'll get better at actually taking orcs down.
We finished them off, and promptly started searching for a potion to revive poor Katniss, who got hit in the head two or three times. I did find a few potions, and one of them was enough to get her on her feet again. There wasn't much else in the house; Kain found some kind of amulet that he thinks is from the mysterious cult, and we found a note on the leader telling him to take care of Harold, but that was it. Once Katniss is fully recovered, I think we're going to see if we can follow the trail Cina found leading away from the house. Hopefully we'll find some answers then.
