A nagging question.
Macross had a nagging doubt that he couldn’t shake. While most of his opinion of churchmen was guided by the idea that they were bat-shit crazy, he still knew they had a sort of internal logic. It didn’t make sense unless you were a churchman but they do have a logic. What if the cleansing needed was within? We’re going to take something from a graveyard that Baldomero knows about. Maybe the grave robbing is from his own monastery and he requires absolution or cleansing. Wariness is settling in. Do I know everything I need to know about what we’re getting into?

Total Cleansing is Right?!
Macross looked at Baldomero with suspicion. Total Cleansing for the light to return? What exactly was he talking about? Unfortunately, Baldomero had the ability to annoy and exasperate Macross with a single smarmy glare. To top it off, the expert short cut taking and corner cutting that Macross found so enjoyable usually got a rather sanctimonious sniff from Baldomero. ONLY because he turned out to be right about 90% of the time and was devilishly clever, Macross had to suck it up. It was like looking at canal water in a drinking tankard and having the man say it was good for your constitution and ability to fight off infections. Well, that doesn’t mean anyone wants to drink it, man. By Oliddamara, life could be so lacking in dignity!

Total Cleansing? Hmmm. It reminded him of some Cleansing concoction that twisted barmaid had suggested for clearing his innards. Not likely to be what he was babbling about. Maybe it’s what he uses to move as quickly as he does. Maybe not. She was a nasty, depraved trollop. I should find her when we get back to Verbobonc. Rumor has it she was the girlfriend of some senior cleric of Saint Cuthbert. So much for the ecclesiastical moral high ground. Church girls are the most depraved, indeed.

Maybe he means kill them all! Looks like some of my charm is rubbing off on him. Macross felt his mood rise to more positive level. Yes, we will kill them and cleanse the streets of Verbobonc with their blood and pain. Cleansing indeed!

Within there is turmoil
Within there is turmoil
Without there is turmoil

Inner sanctum must remain unvanquished.
Only through a total cleansing can the light reemerge.

The Downtime
Macross measured the downtime by the position of the sun's shadow. Downtime was always a form of discipline and he liked to treat it as a professional skill of waiting. They had some time to wait, either for noon or for darkness. He cautiously regarded the others in the alleyway to make sure they were camouflaged and not easily seen by others. Good work, he hoped. Then he peered up at the patrols covering the wall. The question was whether the orcs would have better eyesight at night or during the day and whether the patrols would be heavier during either time. Also, when would they be most diligent? In the meantime he carefully wrapped the rags from the gutter around the grapnel in case it needed to be padded and therefore noise muffled. Sometimes when faced with a difficult decision it was easier to figure out all the angles before and then make the decision. Small tasks seemed to help make the time pass more easily. It was time to consult with the crew.

It’s a sign for sure.
Macross perused the map left by the man in the crumpled hat. He always loved when he felt the start of an adventure. Deep in his liver he could feel the promise of better. Not guaranteed to make things better but it had certainly changed his mood.

Life can be undignified
Well I shouldn’t be shocked, should I? My partner in rebellion is a sanctimonious religious type who thinks I have chosen to not make a difference. I’m feeling the pain of heartburn. Didn’t I drag that ungrateful man out of the burning house and sure death at the hands of an orc guard? ( That’s enough, out of you. The fact that I set fire to it is not relevant.) No one needs to make a difference. It’s perfectly fine that many do not. I think I have made a choice to make a difference. What have I done to deserve such dreadful treatment? Life is unfair, really. Why me?

I fail to see how an over enthusiastic rookie can be considered a meek victim. He is a loose ballista looking to ruin my day. How am I getting saddled with such an outrageous trainee? Why me? Life is so unfair.

Epic!
Some live entire lives
Some live entire lives
with no difference to make.
Others are given the gift of opportunity to matter.
No arachnoid minions of Darkness hiding in alleys will deter.
A Benedictine monk shall not cower during the suffering of the meek.

While the selfish run...
Flying kick!

Time is running out.
Macross could see the signs. He looked at the normal places that the beggars would have been working and noticed there weren’t as many as there should have been. But what was truly telling was the lack of familiar faces. These guys were all new or junior guildsmen. Bad sign. When the senior guildsmen are laying low something was in the making and it could not be positive for the cause. Shit!

The plan had been to go over the wall into the docks and find Fuliarro, but it was starting to look like a one way trip out of the city until things cooled off. Maybe even a change to get out sooner than planned. I feel the trap closing and only a fool would stay to watch his own death.

The zone is Hot.
I knew better than to get angry with Baldomero about attracting attention to the cause. He was just doing what he felt was needed. But it was bad joss or fortune to give up so much anonymity when it could be avoided. Especially when it was clear that there were forces in action more powerful than we could deal with ourselves.

Spiders don’t flourish during Fireseek, and certainly not in such large quantities in an alleyway. It is a sign of danger we need to heed. The guard is going to be seething at the insult and loss of face from the incident. The Spider Queen and her minions are on the move and the zone is Hot. We need to get out and let their wrath fall upon the stone walls of the city. We need to get out!

A chance encounter...
Fireseek 22
4pm
You all join up after Baldomero's battle with the Orc Sargent. Slipping through the corridors. To the left, in a corner between two houses, Macross spots an abnormal mass of thick spider webs. He looks closer and it appears that it is swarming with black widow spiders. Pointing this out to the group, everyone continues forward, carefully avoiding the find.

You turn the corner into a narrow alley after leaving the peculiar webs and see a lonely man leaning on a crooked staff. He wears a crumbled brimmed hat.
"My friends. I beg of you to leave this city. This is a bad time and will only get deadlier as the night approaches."
He peers at you, tilting his head.
"Seek the 6th Cairn." He hands you a crumbled piece of paper.
You turn your head to the paper, and like that he is gone...
Above where he stood, on a rooftop, is a filthy raven, watching you, tilting his head back and forth.

The adventurers make it to Orlen's hovel with some trouble.
It is more evident that bad things are happening in Verbobonc.
They grab Orlen's spell book and make it over the wall and camp in the woods overnight.

Fireseek 18
The adventurers head down the south road and run into Roglathon & company.
The rangers furnish them with supplies and horses.
They camp with the rangers and rest the night.

Fireseek 19
Heading out
The come to the lightning tree and the valley of the kings.

Epic × 2!
But wait! It gets even better!
I just got handed a copper piece by the Beggar Captain. He says, “I feel sorry for you, man!”

I’m getting shit from the Beggar Captain because he thinks I’ve gotten an awful assignment from the Scarlet Guild. A joke at my expense. I will be hearing about this forever......

Keep a low profile, I said.
Well it didn’t last long I can tell you. I said to him, “Keep a low profile, brother.” I should have known better than to assume he’d listen to his boss. Well what do you know but on the jaunt across town he decides to pick the pockets of an Uruk-hai guard Seargent, surrounded by only 20 or so of his subordinates. Why of course, find the poorest paid and toughest bastard out there and try to rob him in front of all his people. How much lower a profile can you get? Now the rookie has been made. He is going to get beat down every time the guard sees him. The one strength the brotherhood can’t afford to give up is anonymity, and there it goes down the sewer.

But wait! It gets even better....

Instead of taking a beating that is well deserved and probably fair, given the circumstances he decides to make a run for it! So Baldomero steps in and blows his cover and publicly challenges the Uruk-hai! Now he’s been made because he beats the Sergeant in public. Yes indeed, fucked again. Middle of an occupied city, trying to build the foundations of a resistance and 2 out of 5 make a public display of themselves.

At first I wondered if the Big Boss was playing a bad joke on me and had saddled me with the worst recruit he had or wanted to get rid of. But no one deserves this kind of impulsive behavior. This is a big favor I am owed for training this guy.

Wishing I was someone else, someone better
I can still hear Master Duerith scolding me for my lack of attention, “You must visualize the mathematics and use the details of the energy to create the desired effect” --- claiming I was too distracted to master the complex components of my spells. “You are always day-dreaming about picking up a sword and joining the Lance Battalion--- riding off to conquer some terrible evil. Pretending you are Kilkennard won’t help you find your familiar or learn to cast read magic.”

Today my new family needed Kilkennard and all they had was a fool who selected the wrong spell. Who was I going to charm? My failure cost us a potential friend and an ally. While I liked his haughty attitude very little, I mourn his loss.
