TPK!!
Bad luck and overextended party leads to TOTAL PARTY KILL.

Here are our choices:

1. Keep playing Skull & Shackles, but skip forward a bit: say 5th level.

2. Resume Kingmaker campaign. Play last module of Kingmaker, and then make another choice about what to do next.

3. Play another Adventure Path. Probably next choice is Rise of the Runelords, a very traditional D&D sword and sorcery campaign.

4. Someone else DMs for a while.

Lets discuss then take a vote.

Epic!
Piracy
To be reported to Pathfinder Society when possible.

Belated entry in my journal regarding trip down the Slithering Coast. Three noteworthy items here:

(1) Devil fish, sharks and other fascinating aquatic creatures in this region. Very difficult to defend from such creatures from a small craft such as ours.

(2) Piracy evidently popular among goblins, combining their lust for gold with their man-eating tendencies. Goblin pirate ship attempted to capture us. However, the hunter became the hunted -- the prey turned out to have sharp teeth. We captured or killed all goblin pirates, whose combat tactics focus upon mass swarming through ganging up. Specialized individuals trip boarders, who are swarmed and killed once down. However, such tactics proved fruitless when dealing with agile and hard-hitting adversaries such as ourselves. Goblins also had alchemist using alchemist fire, which ended up destroying the goblin ship. So, no report regarding what was supposedly a good amount of loot, to our great detriment.

(3) Some Mwangi tribesmen along the shore. Declined to raid them -- figured that there was no honor in massacre of defenseless innocents.

The Slithering Coast
To be reported to Pathfinder Society when possible.

Backstabbing gnome leads us to squibber in the Slithering Coast. Squibber, named Rickety, agrees to do job if we first burn down rival. Went up river to have Naga cast spell on us to prevent us from disclosing that Rickety behind our dastardly deed, on way fought giant wasps and crocodiles. On way back, collected tar, appears that tar bombs key weapon used by local pirates.

In small boat to ambush rival squibber, caught off guard by sudden storm and destroyed boat while losing bard guide. Nevertheless successfully burned rival squib-yard. Faced many magical enemies -- is it common practice for local squibs and other merchants to ally with wizard or other spellcaster (e.g. Naga)? Left with stolen goods on stolen boat belonging to wizard. Many, many potions of Blur as well as a magical masthead. Fortune favors the bold, especially in the Shackles.

Had a Turtle tattooed upon my shoulder, now have a ghostly guardian? So strange and yet effective.

While ship being squibbed, have time to explore. Look forward to learning more about the Slithering Coast. Fascinating place for an explorer and soldier of fortune such as myself. Traveling companions not bad either.

Misha Tay's Journal – Burn!
We finally found the squibber! It wasn’t easy since most of our crew wanted to just feed Conchobar to sharks. Rickety’s Squibs is located on the Slithering Coast, tucked away safely from outsiders who doesn’t know it’s exact location. We had to spend some time to find the marker, a flag which we need to know the exact coding for safe entry to it’s dock.

The squibbing wasn’t free. With nothing to pay, Rickety wanted us to put his competitor Ossie out of business, in exchange for our squibbing fees. Ha! Such an easy task for pirates like us! Rickety didn’t want us to link back to him in the event we got caught, and made us visit a Naga friend of his. The Naga’s place is full of spirits I can almost feel them. I saw big sister Sandy gave me a wink when I caught her doing some chant, she is so cool! I want to be just like her. The Naga ended up casting some spell on us and off we went.

We needed to travel to Ossie’s in a little boat. Cattails Clavier suddenly told the crew that he sensed a storm coming, not long after that, the water went rough and a massive storm hit us. Our little boat ended up crashing to some rocks and we all had to swim to shore. The poor half-elven guide sent by Rickety drowns there and then… RIP.

When we were at Ossie’s, the weather was really bad, we lost most of the tar we collected on the way, but at least we had a tar bomb each. We ended up burning Ossie’s docks, a warehouse and an office. But not before we were greeted by these mechanical balls! I hate balls. Also a rope golem! So cool, never seen one before except reading about them. I wondered when I could create one for myself. A few guards came and we dispatched them without too much trouble, but these balls! Did I mention I hated balls? Last thing I remembered was we all got on to this really cool boat after we made sure burning this whole place down. A few of the boys were trying hard to get the sails out and get away from this stupid place, while we were try very hard to get rid of these magical balls which were killing us. I think I fell unconscious when those balls tripped me again and again. I woke up cuddling onto big sister Sandy’s lap after she healed me, and we hurried back to Rickety’s Squibs to let him know of our success, just in time to stop him from sinking our Man's Promise in case we failed…

As expected, Conchobar ran as soon as he could after we left Rickety’s Squibs. I am sure we will see him again.

Update and Reminders
* I've added the rules for ship combat (http://www.epicwords.com/wikis/20944) which are slightly different than Pathfinder standard. You may want to review in preparation for this weekend's session.

* I'm not very happy with standard Skull & Shackles Infamy rules, and am considering substantial revisions. However, for the next few sessions, the infamy score will basically measure how easy it is to recruit crew.

* I've updated NPCs, including Rickety, Mumchance, Cheville and others.

* Remember that xp from upcoming session is awarded assuming you have made at least one journal entry since last played.

Skull & Shackles Session 5
Synopsis
With the PCs firmly in command of the Man's Promise, they reluctantly agree to let Conchobar live in return for directions to a "squibber" on the Slithering Coast. They sail to Rickety's squibs, who tells them he will squib their ship if they wreck Ossie's yard (a competing squibber).

In order to protect Rickety from accidental disclosure of his identity, the PCs travel upriver and visit Nilsa, Rickety's naga associate. They encounter crocodiles and giant wasps along the way.

On the way to Ossie's, a storm rises and the PC's boat smashes against a rock. A half-elven bard that was serving as their guide drowns, but the other PCs swim to shore, then travel to Ossie's.

With the storm still raging, the PCs fight a rope golem, a swarm of mechanical caltrops and a half dozen guards. They set fire to the docks, a warehouse and an office before stealing a magical boat. With the boat spinning out of control, and many of the PCs down, they finally destroy the last of the caltrops, maneuver the boat away from Ossie's and return to Rickety's, just as Rickety was towing out the Man's Promise to sink it.

Aboard the boat, the PCs discover many magical treasures, but they decide to scuttle the boat rather than risk detection by the wizard who built it.

The session ends with the Man's Promis in dock, and the PCs wondering how to spend the next month ...

Experience
Crocodiles CR2 x4 2400
Giant Wasps CR3 x3 2400
Rope Golem CR5 1600
Caltrop Swarm CR4 1200
Guards CR2 x4(full) + x6(half) 4200
Swimming ashore in storm 1000
Burning Ossie's 2000

Significant Treasure
* 32 potions of blur
* magical ship's figurehead
* one-third of treasure map
* Romaldo got additional ammunition and can buy sulpher from Rickety

Notes
* At the conclusion of the adventure, Sandy binds a ghost to each PC that was present via a turtle tattoo. As long as the ghost remains, that PC gets a +1 natural armor bonus.
* I'm likely going to tweak the way that critical failures work. Instead of hitting yourself, I'm thinking to give the enemy a free disarm/sunder/trip attack. More information later.

Fight!
Sandra was trapped in the damp caves with the other adventurers after being shoved down by the terrible Conchabar. Unable to get out they were forced to fight the fallen corpses of those who had perished there before them, as well as a death knight. Sandra proved her usefulness by healing those in need, throwing a tar bomb and electrocuting some of the ghouls. However she was humiliated by her inability to climb or swim properly and was thus unable to join in the final battle, as she was busy getting a good soak while clinging to her barrel (thanks to Clavier's (?) sacrifice of his precious rum).

Meanwhile Orcana, a low-ranking Squib on the man's promise, had been sharing life stories with one of the other new squibs, a young man who had been abused by Fipps. She herself was but your regular Orkin girl who ran away from her clan to prove herself in battle rather than childbirth. When the time came for a second mutiny in which her strength might contribute meaningfully to the final result Orcana seized on Fipp's dastardly act to shank him a few times in the side and back in the hope of earning her new friend's trust and to hopefully be seen as an equal by the new leaders of the ship.

The battle was successful and Orcana was made part of their circle of officers, but it seems her idea of officer responsibilities and privileges is more savage than those of her new compatriots...

Misha Tay's Journal - New Captain!
Not much time to write this morning, our pursuer caught up to us and it was all ACTION this morning! Our ship was hit a few times with some powerful magical combustion, and then a mysterious fog appeared out of nowhere, I am certain they have a powerful magic user aboard their boat. I want to have that power!!! One day...

Anyway, I made this guy goes to sleep as he tried to attack me, too bad he won’t be waking up anytime soon haha. I then heard Sam screamed, I turn around and saw this big fat guy knocked him unconscious. I tried to help but this stupid guy with a whip stopped me and I had to run. The fight was over before we know it. The captain is dead and the rest of the Rahadoumi surrendered. When I saw Sam again, he was walking funny, maybe they hurt his leg. The captain of the pirates, Harrigan gave us an option, to either join them in piracy, or die. WOW, so cool, why wasn’t father a pirate? Maybe that would’ve given me more incentives to learn to sail!

I put both of my hands up and they assigned us back to the Man’s promise with the whip guy they named Scourge and his boss Mister Plugg. Oh that fat guy is with us too, his name is Fipps, he is so cute, Sam doesn’t share my views though.
.
.
.
Rough couple of days, life of a pirate is not as fun as it sounds. That Plugg guy made us work extra hard. The new crews are quite interesting though. This guy called Zid Kang helped me with most of the heavy lifting work, a halfing called Vera told me all about being a woman onboard of a pirate ship and what to look out for, something about not offering yourself out so easily… A kid named Kilduff helped me to steal food out of the kitchen, well he is really my age but he is so innocent. Then there is this Hobgoblin who called himself "Cattails" Clavier, scary. Romaldo is just cool calm and collected as always. Sir Seaweed is a funny one, he is about my age I think so it feels weird calling him “Sir”, oh well. Sandy Quinn is like an older sister to me, we share a lot in common, she also love the excitement too! She told me she hates Plugg so now I hate Plugg as well. Conchobar is the nicest gnome I know, and Fipps is as fat as ever.
.
.
.
I couldn’t find Sam most of the time, and it seems his leg is still hurt. I wonder if that was the reason why he wasn’t required to work on deck like the rest of us. We then hit a huge storm, Plugg sent everyone on the riggings and we somehow crashed into a coral reef. When the storm ended, we found out that our rudder was destroyed, I could fix it I guess, but I rather not show them what I know for now. Plugg ordered groups to go out and search the nearby island for woods to fix our ship. Some groups returned, some didn’t… and the groups that did told us there are ghouls on the island! Oh Pharasma!!! How I wish they would let me off the boat so I can send these lost spirits to you!!! A few more days had pass, and more groups were send back out as they didn’t collect enough woods to fix the rudder. Heh, if only they knew I could use half the wood to fix the rudder. Conchobar came back first and said something about “It’s done.” to Plugg, and Pluggs told us how Sandy and his friends were eaten by ghouls on the island… I cried.

Eventually the other group came back as well but less Zid and Kilduff two days later. A fight broke out pretty much immediately, as it turns out Conchobar had tricked Sandy and his friends into a carven and were trapped there for 2 days, after their escape, they now seek for revenge, well I hated Plugg anyway, so might as well. Sam took his time when he stomped on Fipps’s head while the fat ass was on the ground, never seen Sam so happy before. I am glad Sandy wasn’t eaten by ghouls like Plugg said. Now Vera is our new captain and I have been assigned with my most dreaded job… fixing boat...IRONIC!!!

Misha Tay's Journal - New Adventure!
Ever since father’s passing, I have been traveling from town to town, settlement to settlement to seek for ways to improve my Juju. I know he always wanted me to be a successor to his ship yard, but the love of building a ship is one thing, running it as a business and live an uneventful life is another. I thrive on the excitements and risks of being an adventurer! I hope he will forgive me for leaving old Kendrick and the crew behind, I am sure they’ll run a tighter ship building business than I ever will.

While having a drink in the local tavern today, I overheard a guy asking for passage to the hills north of Sargava. I approached him and introduced myself, it turns out he is also interested in the Juju culture around there, so I asked if I could accompany him which he agrees. Sam Stryker his name is, he is no Juju practitioner like me, but he belongs to this Pathfinder Society which I am not too familiar with. A cult of some sort? Hah.
.
.
.
Found a captain who might take us near our destination, for a price of course. A Rahadoumi merchant vessel of some sort named The Man's Promise, I love their spices. Finally at sea again! Yay! Brings back memories of how father used to force me to learn how to run a ship. I bet he wishes I was a boy, perhaps then I will turn out more like the sailor he wishes me to be.
.
.
.
Something is going on, I knew it. The Rahadoumi captain is yelling out orders and keep looking behind our ship. The last time I was on father’s ship and he acted the same way was when he suspects we were being chased by pirates. He also had everyone working at the riggings, full speed trying to lose our pursuer. This is EXCITING! Now that’s what I am talking about, action! I went and told Sam about the great news, but he looks a bit nervous. Poor guy looks as if he got a pole up his butt or something…

I am an explorer, intellectual and soldier of fortune. And now, apparently, a pirate, too.
Events not turning out as planned, but opportunities for furthering knowledge and reputation of the Pathfinder Society abound. Keeping journal notes for future report to Society venture-captain in Shackles. Focus on pirates of the Shackles and marine geography.

---

Original plan to arrive in hills north of Sargova, explore coastline for study of juju coastal culture. Booked passage on The Man's Promise, Rahadumi merchant vessel. Captured by pirates aboard Wormwood, made to join them, treated as swabbie. Noteworthy--was sexually abused by Fipps--common amongst pirate cultures of Shackles?

Transferred to Man's Promise from Wormwood, continued sexual abuse. Noted two factions on Man's Promise, one faction apparently killed on zombie-infested island. Faction returned and started mutiny on board Man's Promise--captain of Man's Promise (Plugg) had already violated orders of Free Captain Harrigan.

Seized opportunity of confusion to kill Fipps--felt very good, first action as pirate! Forced to join forces with renegade faction as Fipps part of same clique as Plugg. Aided in killing Plugg and Scourge by jumping through rear windows of Captain's cabin and flanking Plugg and Scourge.

Now, for better or for worse, junior officer on board Man's Promise, soon to be renamed Queen Vera's revenge. Really happy to be back on the water with some status and rank, fellow shipmates seem decent for pirates. Feel blessed by Besmara to be free of rapist and unreasonably stern discipline of Plugg.

Wonderful opportunity to explore Shackles, be out on the water, learn about pirate culture and to report back to Society. And also to find and possess powerful artifacts...
