Tales are told throughout Golarion of shadowy figures that lurk in dark corners—stories recounted at children’s bedsides feature bestial creatures that come out only when the moon is right, and fireside legends speak of otherworldly beings beyond reckoning,whose very existence is more than the human mind can bear to know. These are the legends that explain where the blood of the family cow went, and why clerics spend so much time ensuring the proper Pharasmin rites are observed at gravesites throughout the Inner Sea. One can write them off as simple, scary stories in Absalom or Westcrown, but in Ustalav, everyone knows the truth of the things that go bump in the night.

The Campaign begins with the party meeting in the Town of Kassen, a small town on the banks of the Tourondel River in the Fang Wood of Nirmathas whose location allows for quick transport of logs from its substantial lumber industry directly to Lake Encarthan. It is a relatively close-knit settlement, as with most of the folk in Nirmathas, with origins that stretch back to the year 4522 AR, when the town's founder, Ekat Kassen, grew tired of life as an adventurer and retired there.

This year’s Quest for the Everflame is special: it has been 4 years since the mayor last decided to send a group of young heroes to the crypt, but with a new influx of population over the past year, Mayor Uptal is hopeful the Quest will help bring the newcomers into the community. The characters meet during a solemn ceremony in the town square, in which they are to retrieve the Everflame, bring it back, and enjoy the feast. . .
